Before You Pay: Choosing a Photographer You Can Trust in Second Life

Second Life photography is more than taking a screenshot and adding a filter. A talented photographer can transform your avatar, relationship, wedding, family, or special event into artwork that represents how you want that moment remembered.

But before you hand over your Linden Dollars, you should know what you're paying for.

Ask to See Their Work

One of the most important things you can do before hiring a Second Life photographer is simple:

Ask for examples.

A professional photographer should be comfortable showing you a portfolio of completed work. In fact, portfolios are important because they allow potential clients to see the photographer's style and understand the type of finished product they can expect.

Don't rely on one beautiful advertisement or one impressive image. Look at several examples.

Pay attention to:

• Faces and avatar details

• Hair and edges

• Hands and body positioning

• Lighting and shadows

• Background quality

• Posing

• Overall realism or artistic style

• Consistency from one photograph to another

You aren't looking for someone whose work is universally "the best." Photography is art, and everyone has different tastes. You're looking for a photographer whose actual work matches what YOU want.

Make Sure the Examples Are Their Work

This is especially important when you're paying for extensive editing.

Ask whether the photographs being shown are examples of the photographer's own finished work. If you're unsure, there is nothing wrong with asking questions about their process.

A trustworthy photographer should be able to explain what they offer, what type of editing is included, and what you should expect from your finished photograph.

Know What Your Linden Dollars Include

Before paying, ask exactly what you're purchasing.

Does your price include the photography session? Editing? A background? Poses? Retouching? Multiple avatars? How many finished images will you receive? Can you request corrections? How long will delivery normally take?

Some Second Life photographers offer simple portraits while others provide extensive artistic editing. Those are very different services, and the price may reflect that.

Neither approach is wrong.

What matters is knowing which one you're buying.

Don't Be Afraid to Ask Questions

A photographer isn't doing you a favor by allowing you to hire them. You are a client considering purchasing their service.

It's completely reasonable to ask:

"Can I see some examples of your work?"

"Do you have examples similar to the style I'm looking for?"

"What exactly is included in this price?"

"How much editing will be done?"

"Will my avatar still look like my avatar?"

Those aren't difficult-client questions. They're smart-client questions.

Trust Goes Both Ways

A good photographer-client relationship requires communication from both sides.

Tell your photographer what you like. Show inspiration pictures when appropriate. Explain whether you want realistic, romantic, glamorous, dark, funny, fantasy, or something completely different.

At the same time, allow your photographer to explain what is realistically possible and how their particular artistic style works.

The best results usually happen when the client and photographer understand the vision before the session begins.

Your Avatar Is Personal

We spend countless hours creating our Second Life avatars. We choose the shape, skin, hair, clothing, tattoos, accessories, and tiny details that make them ours.

So when someone photographs your avatar, you should feel confident that they understand what you're asking for.

A beautifully edited picture isn't successful if you look at it and think:

"That's pretty... but that doesn't look like me."

Talk about expectations before the editing begins, especially if maintaining your avatar's recognizable features is important to you.

See It. Ask About It. Then Book It.

There are incredibly talented photographers and digital artists throughout Second Life, each with their own style and approach.

Take your time finding the right one.

Look at their portfolio. Ask questions. Understand their prices. Read their policies. Know what you're receiving.

Most importantly, never feel uncomfortable asking to see examples before spending your Linden Dollars.

You deserve to know what you're paying for.
