The Man I Didn’t Know I Was Waiting For

How do you describe the person of your dreams?

Do you picture a tall, handsome man or a gorgeous woman? Do you imagine someone smart, funny, and kind—the person who can make a whole room laugh? And beyond their looks, do you think about the kind of relationship you want to build together?

By the time my husband came into my life, I wasn’t dreaming about any of that anymore.

I had given up on love.

Between a real-life husband who cheated throughout our marriage and a Second Life relationship that went completely sideways, I was seriously done. I wanted peace, friendship, and a little fun. My heart had been through enough.

Then this tall, sexy man popped into my message box.

“Hey, can I tell you how beautiful that dress looks on you?”

Well. So much for being left alone. 😂

He was sweet and kind, but I didn’t know what to think. Part of me thought, “Great. He’ll be nice for a little while, I’ll let my guard down, and then I’ll regret it.”

But he stayed consistent.

He became my best friend. We could talk about anything, and he listened without judgment. The more time we spent together, the more comfortable I felt being myself with him.

We agreed we would be friends with benefits.

Yes, I know. Famous last words.

We spent as much time together as we could, and somewhere along the way, being his friend wasn’t enough for me anymore.

I fell hard. I was in love.

He, however, was firmly against a relationship. After spending ten years in a previous one, he knew he didn’t want to do that again. He was honest about it, even when my heart wanted a different answer.

Eventually, though, his feelings started changing, too.

Now, two years later, we’re married—and happily so.

I love this man beyond reason. I love our friendship, our home, and the life we’ve built together. I love that he is still the person I want to tell everything to.

And I want to remember to be grateful for him every day. It’s easy to get comfortable with someone’s love and forget to tell them how much it means. I want him to know that I see him, appreciate him, and am happy we found each other.

Relationships in Second Life can have a hard time surviving. Distance, schedules, past hurts, and everything happening outside the screen can make it complicated.

But I believe my husband and I will go the distance.

That might sound a little bold. Maybe even a little ego-driven. I promise it comes from knowing what we have and seeing how we both care for it.

We choose each other every day.

We choose to talk things through and protect the peace we’ve found together. When something is difficult, I still want him beside me while we figure it out.

Right now, our lives make it hard for either of us to move. But we can visit, make memories, and keep planning for the future.

And when I retire?

Look out, hubs. You’ve been warned. ❤️

I thought I was done with love. Then a man complimented my dress, became my best friend, and kept giving me reasons to trust him.

Turns out, I still had a love story left.
